Series overview [edit]

Plot [edit]

The series takes identify in modern-solar day Paris and revolves around the adventures of two teenagers,[25] [26] Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste,[27] who transform into their superhero personas, Ladybug and Cat Noir respectively, using magical jewels known as the Miraculous, when evil arises. All the while, Marinette and Adrien struggle with their feelings for each other, not knowing each other'southward clandestine identities – Marinette is in dear with Adrien just not Cat Noir, while Adrien is in honey with Ladybug but non Marinette.

Their chief enemy is Gabriel Agreste, Adrien's father, who covets and attempts to steal their jewels. Using the Butterfly Miraculous as the supervillain Hawk Moth, he creates akumas, butterflies infused with negative energy, to "akumatize" Paris' everyday citizens, turning them into supervillains when they experience negative emotions.[25] [28] He intends to employ the jewels to wish his wife Emilie Agreste back to life later on she had fallen ill from using the damaged Peacock Miraculous before the events of the series. He is sometimes aided by his assistant Nathalie Sancoeur, who, using Emilie'due south jewel every bit the supervillain Mayura, uses feathers chosen amoks to create sentimonsters, magical lifeforms with a seemingly endless diverseness of forms and abilities.

As Hawk Moth's villains become tougher, Main Fu, the Guardian of the Miraculous, allows Ladybug to borrow unlike Miraculouses and recruit her other classmates and friends as superheroes.

Marinette and Adrien as well run into guitarist Luka Couffaine and fencer Kagami Tsurugi, developing angel for them and complicating their already convoluted romance.

In the third season, Ladybug besides witnesses an alternate future where Cat Noir has been akumatized into a deranged, murderous version of himself called Cat Blanc. Although his beingness has been erased from history, her memory of him scars her. This season also introduces Félix Graham de Vanily, Adrien's maternal cousin and Gabriel'due south nephew, who has a vendetta against the Agrestes for not attending his begetter's funeral.

By the quaternary season, Marinette is made the Guardian and starts training under Su-Han, the leader of the Guardians. Nathalie falls sick from using the Peacock Miraculous, so Hawk Moth repairs it and fuses it with his Miraculous to get Shadow Moth, able to create both villains and sentimonsters. Marinette's best friend Alya Césaire learns about her underground identity, and Luka discovers hers and True cat Noir'southward identities by accident, but keeps them to himself. Over time, Marinette starts to prioritize Alya and other temporary recruits over Cat Noir.

At the end of the quaternary season, Gabriel gains access to most all of the Miraculous jewels, albeit giving up the Peacock Miraculous to Félix and becomes Monarch. Ladybug and Cat Noir - once again the only two superheroes - resolve to retrieve the Miraculous back 1 by 1.

Formulation and creation [edit]

The series is based on an original concept created by French author and storyboarder, Thomas Astruc. He was inspired past a meeting with a certain lady and "decades of comics binge reading".[30] In an interview with Nolife, Astruc said he was working every bit an animator on the show West.I.T.C.H. when he met a woman wearing a T-shirt with a ladybug on it. They began to share drawings, some of which were ladybug-themed. Astruc also noted that Marinette's signature pigtail hairstyle was fashioned later the woman. They besides worked on the cartoon A.T.O.Grand. around 2004–05. Astruc commencement drew Ladybug on viscid notes and remarked about how strong the Ladybug character was. He had had no memories of seeing ladybug-themed superheroes in comics.[31]

Astruc had intended to brand Ladybug a comic book series until he met Jeremy Zag, who loved the projection and wanted to produce information technology as a drawing; Zag was 25 at the time and non originally from the cartoon industry.[31]

In developing Cat Noir, Astruc said that ladybugs represented good luck, so it was natural to partner her with a black cat graphic symbol with bad luck powers. Cat Noir was a tribute to comic characters, similar Catwoman. And then it was like having Catwoman and Spider-Man in the aforementioned show but reversed genders and roles.[31]

A graphic symbol named Félix was originally going to have the role of Cat Noir,[32] merely he was subsequently scrapped in favor of Adrien Agreste because the creative team felt that Félix was a cliché of a male anime protagonist and that Adrien would allow them to tell more interesting stories.[33] [34] In September 2015, Astruc indicated that he was open to revisiting the character of Félix,[35] but he abandoned information technology by February 2016, writing that the character was a poor thought.[36] Years after, in 2019, Félix was remade as Adrien'due south cousin and was renamed Félix Graham de Vanily.[ needs update ]

Hiring companies [edit]

In 2010, the show was announced at Cannes' MIPCOM with French product groups Univergroup Pictures and Onyx Films heading the project and working with Method Animation and Zagtoon. Aton Soumache of Onyx and Method[37] said that they want "to create a glamorous superhero character with a real European flair with Paris every bit [the] backdrop." The producers had also planned to animate it in stereoscopic 3D (currently, the show is produced using CGI blitheness).[29]

In the summer of June 2012, Toei Animation Co., Ltd., the famous Japanese blitheness studio co-operative owned & operated past Toei Company, Ltd. in Japan, was announced as a co-producer.[37] Two years before 2012, Toei Animation had released a PreCure picture that was fix in Paris, France and was very interested in expanding their international audience.[31] Fifty-fifty afterwards the production moved to CGI animation, Toei even so remained co-producer, with the executive producers from the company being credited.[38]

On 21 November 2012, a memorandum of agreement between Zagtoon, Method Blitheness, SAMG Animation and SK Broadband was announced: together, the companies would invest The states$l 1000000 through 2017 into 5 projects. The get-go of these projects was adult into Miraculous, which received an investment of $10 one thousand thousand. Every bit a role of the deal, SK Broadband would have exclusive rights in South Korea for video on need release, available to the subscribers of the visitor's IPTV platform B Television set.[39] [twoscore]

In 2019, Zag and Gloob signed an agreement where the Brazilian visitor will outset to co-produce the next seasons of Miraculous, in addition to having exclusivity of exhibition in Brazil and the addition of a Brazilian character.[41]

Blitheness [edit]

When Toei Blitheness joined equally a co-producer in the summer of June 2012, it was too announced that the evidence would exist drawn in a colorful manga-like style.[37] After in September, Zagtoon, Method, & Toei released a traditionally-animated promotional video for Miraculous Ladybug.[11] [12] The video featured Marinette (in different clothes similar to the clothes in the current serial) as Ladybug, and a (now-scrapped, subsequently Adrien's cousin) different character named Félix as True cat Noir,[32] Marinette and Félix'south Kwamis, Tikki and Plagg, Hawk Moth/Gabriel (without the mask and with a different outfit, look, and lair compared to the current series), and as well 2 akumatized villains from Season 1 in the current show - The Mime and Mr. Dove. Their Miraculous and their transformation sequences had a different look similar to the Miraculous and the transformations in the current series. The demo song from the promotional music video was performed & composed past Noam, who would subsequently compose music and perform songs for the current series.[vii] [42] [43]

The whole anime concept was a complete success; merely there were concerns about the marketability of traditional 2D animation and the difficulty in animating Ladybug's costume of red with blackness spots, as information technology caused some strobing furnishings.[31] Executive producer Jared Wolfson said that Zag wanted the animation to be cinematic and epic, unique and dissimilar, and said that they are continuing to partner with Toei as it brings in the Asian inspiration and that a second version of the show might be a potential product for future purposes.[44] [45] [46] [47] [48] [49]

The aforementioned problem with 2d animation was resolved past moving to CGI animation; the switch also allowed for easier implementation of mobile camera angles.[31] SAMG Blitheness, a CGI blitheness studio located in Due south Korea which officially joined in the product in the fall of November 2012,[39] [forty] produced modeling and animation.[l] Zag later recalled that SAMG was chosen for quality reasons in a video message he sent to a South Korean press conference held in 2015 by the Seoul-based visitor.[51] Astruc and assistant director, Wilfried Pain, instructed the animators not to improvise scenes and then that they could keep things consequent and understandable.[31] Pain estimated about 350–400 shots are used in a typical twenty-minute episode; with 10 panels per shot, that makes up to 4000 panels an episode.[31] Wolfson said that the evidence'due south blitheness brings dynamic photographic camera angles and texturing.[44] A trailer with the new CGI-animated style was released in October 2013, a year later.[52]

On 22 Jan 2018, Zag posted on Instagram that the crew was working on season 4 and flavour five.[53] [ ameliorate source needed ]

On 18 April 2021, It was confirmed that in addition to season iv and five the evidence will have two more seasons (season 6 and 7)[54] [55]

Themes, writing, and process [edit]

While the show is marketed equally a Western superhero narrative, its thematic base of operations is the Japanese mahō shōjo (magical girl) genre, with its focus on transformation sequences, a schoolhouse cast, the gathering of a team of heroes, animal friends, and end-of-episode collages.[xv] In particular, Ladybug is strongly influenced by the genre's landmark entry Sailor Moon: Not only does the name of Marinette ("little sailor girl") recall Crewman Moon's championship, but the main characters' magical companions reflect Sailor Moon's Luna and Artemis, the chief villain's power resembles that of Queen Beryl, and the show'due south entire plot parallels the story of Sailor Saturn.[fifteen] Ladybug features numerous other direct and indirect references to its inspiration.[15]

The concept for the evidence originally dealt with political themes, geared towards teens and immature adults. Nevertheless, later on failing to gain traction with networks, information technology was retooled for a younger target audience.[56] : xl Astruc said that he is delighted that the show is able to reach younger and older people.[31]

Each episode takes around 3 months to write, from scratch to final validation of broadcasters.[57] Banana manager, Wilfried Pain, said that each episode is composed of two parts: a sitcom aspect where the characters have to speak for themselves, and an activeness element where the camera is ever moving.[31]

Noam Kaniel writes the music and songs. Kaniel has also worked on action superhero shows such as 10-Men, Code Lyoko, W.I.T.C.H., Fantastic Four, Power Rangers, Digimon Fusion and Glitter Force.[44] [58] Kaniel and Zag wrote the theme song. Alain Garcia wrote the English lyrics, which are sung by Wendy Child and Cash Callaway.[59] The French version was performed by Marily and Noam Kaniel.[lx]
